Our very first album review!

Big thanks to Alex James from CouchAssassin.com for writing this great review of Shed Your Helmet.

The final song, much like the entire EP, takes you on a journey through genres  and emotions, leaving you at the end with the feeling “so…that just happened”, while you are left to pick up the pieces of what you thought you’d hear, and place your jaw back on its hinges.”

That’s exactly how we felt when we first listened to the full album too.

EP Completion and CD Release

crazymichelWORDSAlas AT LAST! The record is done! We have made it out of the recording process unscathed by Baba Yaga and to thank her and to thank you we have posted the remixed and mastered versions of Animal Too and Baba Yaga on our soundcloud page. What’s that mysterious low rumble on the tracks you ask? Well that’s bass man Andrew Bryant who added his talents to the entire record. Why do these tracks sound so crisp, clean and clear? Well that’s because Eric Eggleston (http://johnnyhallproductions.com/) and Mauricio Gargel (http://www.mauriciogargel.com/) did such a great job of recording, mixing and mastering it!

We will be posting a new track in the coming days so please stay tuned!

Coming Soon to Mailboxes Near You – Shed Your Helmet

rsz_syhdatedtitlebanner

The time is almost upon us! Soon we shall be able to unleash the wild beast we have created upon the world.

It’s called Shed Your Helmet and it’s definitely a monster for such a little record.  We’re very proud of it.

Over this winter our little beast has      consumed us – our time, our energy, our  souls. But on May 22nd we will finally be  able to pass our unruly creation off to you,  and be freed of it’s menacing grip.

No, wait. I mean, we will finally be able to bestow our wonderful happy-yay-fun record upon your gentle and deserving spirit.

And if you are one of the especially gentle and deserving spirits who helped us make it through contributing to our crowd-funding campaign last summer, well, you shall be rewarded with your copy of the delightful monster even sooner! Sometime in early or mid May (we have to keep it mysterious, after all) Shed Your Helmet will be making its way to a mailbox near you with your name on it. Hopefully your mailbox, that would certainly make things simpler.

But if you didn’t contribute, alas, mark the fated date of May XXII as the opportunity to make amends for your folly, and keep your watch for more details and teasers and all the one-hundred and one ways we’re going to make you crave your very own Shed Your Helmet EP.

Cause it’s coming. And its a beast. Sorta like the sphinx or something, only made of sound.

Yours truly,

-RVR

Thanks and a Little Update

We’d like to officially extend our greatest thanks to everyone who contributed to the Shed Your Helmet EP crowd funding campaign!

And to everyone who shared, promoted and kept an eye on it. We were blown away by the support from all of you and feeling thoroughly encouraged, so thanks for that too! After a meeting this week with our fearless producer Eric Eggleston of Johnny Hall Productions we are all super stoked to start working on what we promise will be a killer EP. We have the dates set and we’ll be heading into the studio at the end of September, and we’ll let you all know as soon as we’ve got a date for the release.

If your looking for your well needed (and doctor recommended) Von Rex fix we have a couple of really cool shows coming up. First up, we are playing the winners circle of Beer Fest Friday: Play For The Pot at Lunenburg Pub on the 29th of August. This is the second time we have made it to the winners circle but the first time we have actually been available to play it. Then we are playing at the incredibly awesome House of Targ on September 5th. Playing here brings out something fierce out in us for some reason… can’t be sure if its the pin ball, space invaders, porgies or beer but this show will definitely be a special one.

Thanks again everybody! Hope to see you all out soon.

Crowding our way to the Shed Your Helmet EP

Its official – we’ve launched the Shed Your Helmet EP crowd-funding campaign!

We’ve got some killer tunes for this record but we really need help to get it done. Instead of waiting for some businessman to scout us out for a label or siphoning off the pay from gigs for the next six months we’ve decided to just go ahead and ask you (and your friends and grandparents) to give us a hand with it. For a $10 contribution you get the EP when is finished this fall. For more you get – you guessed it – more!

Check out the campaign page for more info and to watch our goofy video. If you have any questions, other things you’d like to see as perks or comments please feel free to shoot ‘em along!

We are stoked to get this going and even more so to be doing it with our fans on board. The bigger and closer camp Von Rex gets the better it sounds!

Welcome to the Von Rex Website!

Greetings from Camp Von Rex!

Since Michel and I joined forces in 2012 we’ve been keeping very busy – so busy it took us over a year to get this website together, but here it is at last! We’ve been thrilled and fueled by all the support you folks have given us this past year and we’ve got some gargantuan plans for this next one that have us pretty excited. This is a long letter home, but we want you to know what we’ve been up to and what we’re doing next, cause we think it might excite you too!

We played some amazing shows in 2013, from the Ottawa Bluesfest to our first gig in Toronto at the Cameron House. It was a riot opening for wicked bands like The Mahones and The Walkervilles and an equally awesome time headlining shows at Irene’s Pub, The Rainbow and The Lunenburg Pub. We even had a puppet come out to one of our gigs – he did get a little unruly, but we kinda like it when our fans are unruly. Since we’re keeping a list I may as well tell you, we’ve done 16 shows together since our first performance as a duo in February 2013! By the end of 2014 that number will have climbed pretty high – so keep watch on our shows page and Facebook for lots of dates and details! Or you can send us an email at RiishiVonRex@gmail.com to get updates right in your inbox and maybe some goofy messages from yours truly – I do love writing goofy messages.

Live performances aren’t all we’ve been up to though. We recorded three singles together (you can find them on our music page) and we’re currently hammering and screeching away on our next one – a rather wild and slightly unhinged song some of you might have heard live called Baba Yaga. The eponymous slavic witch has been watching us all the while to make sure we do her justice so rest assured we’re giving it everything we’ve got! Our singles have gotten some air-play on CBC Radio, CHUO and CKCU so we know she’s expecting a fair bit from us with this one.

I guess that brings me to the gargantuan plans for this year…

With your help, dear reader, we are going to get some serious work done this spring and summer! First up, we are about to kick off a crowd-funding campaign for our debut record together. We’ll have some awesome perks for funders (and some amusingly bizarre ones) and could not be more excited about the songs we have ready to record. The more support we get the bigger and better the record will get. Are you ready to shed your helmet? Do you feel you will never have enough RVR lovin’? This is a heavy undertaking, so I hope you’re nodding your head.

Once the record is together Michel and I will throw you all a huge release party to say thanks. And make a music video to entertain you. And then get on the road to entertain even more of you! We like keeping busy and we love showing you a good time, so this year we aim to be busier and more wild than ever.

The war table here at Camp Von Rex is covered in maps, plans and ideas. With you on board I think 2014 will be a crazy killer year. Lets keep in touch, dear reader, and keep the music madness flowing and ever expanding – just like the universe.

Yours truly,

Riishi
